British Gas offers the one of the most well regarded central heating maintenance plans on the market today in the form of the HomeCare plan. Essentially, you would pay a set monthly fee (dependent on the level of cover you require) for British Gas to provide insurance cover for your boiler, central heating, electrics and drains. There are a number of different levels of HomeCare cover that a homeowner can subscribe to which range from a simple plan that will solely cover the boiler and controls (Homecare 100 from £9 per month) through to a comprehensive plan that will cover the boiler, central heating, electrics and drains (Homecare 400 from £17 per month).

Published figures suggest that 8 out of 10 calls to the HomeCare team receive service from a HomeCare engineer within the same day so if you have a broken boiler, you needn't suffer from a lack of central heating or no hot water for more than a few hours.

There are currently four HomeCare plans along with a "HomeCare flexi plan" which will cost you less on a monthly basis, but you would have to pay a one-off £50 fee for each engineer call out. Essentially, you need to evaluate each cover plan and determine which services are most important depending on your circumstances. The available HomeCare cover plans are -

HomeCare 100 - Covers your boiler and boiler control upkeep More Info / Apply Now
HomeCare 200 - Same as 100 but adds radiators and hot water cover More Info / Apply Now
HomeCare 300 - Same as 200 but includes plumbing repairs and drains More Info / Apply Now
HomeCare 400 - Same as 300 but also includes the upkeep of electrics More Info / Apply Now

By taking out a British Gas HomeCare 100, 200, 300 or 400 cover plan you can look forward to piece of mind should you have heating problems along with these benefits -

Unlimited engineer call outs
Monthly fee includes parts and labour
HomeCare is an Annual Service
There are over 5,500 highly qualified and CORGI registered engineers on call
HomeCare has a 24/7 manned customer helpline operating 365 days a year

* Please note that prices for HomeCare cover are cheaper if you take out the plan online than if you were to order the cover over the telephone (as I found out to my cost!). Therefore, it is strongly suggested that if you are interested in taking out HomeCare cover that you should order it online to save yourself money.

Boiler Scrappage Scheme

December 2009 saw the announcement from the UK government that they will introduce a boiler scrappage scheme which will provide a £400 rebate towards replacing energy inefficient boilers rated G or worse with energy efficient boilers. The government has pledged £50 million so far which means approximately 125,000 boilers will be replaced. However, there are 4.5 million households that currently have boilers which would qualify under the government boiler scrappage scheme so if you plan to apply it is incredibly important to do so as quickly as possible because the money for boiler rebates will run out fast.

Government Boiler Scrappage Scheme Summary

In summary, you will likely qualify for the government boiler scrappage scheme if :

1. Your boiler has a G energy rating or worse
2. The boiler is in working order and is the main boiler used to heat the home

Next Steps

If you have found that your old boiler will likely qualify for a boiler scrappage scheme by checking our boiler energy rating database and have found that your boiler is rated at 70% efficiency or G rating or worse, you will need to act very quickly to apply for the scrappage scheme as there are far too many people that would qualify for the scheme compared with the funds that the government have allocated, therefore, you need to apply without delay so that you don't miss out.

You need to:

Research the new A rated energy efficient boiler you would like to buy.

The consumer group Which? have a best buy boiler report which you can currently get for just £ 1. Click here for details.

Get a boiler installation quote

Arrange for a boiler installation engineer to give you a quote for the work.

It is important that you do not have the boiler installed prior to being accepted onto the boiler scrappage scheme as this will invalidate your rebate. You should choose your new boiler, get a quote, apply for the boiler scrappage scheme, and once accepted you will be given a £400 voucher which will be issued to you up to ten days after application from 18 January 2010 onwards. The £400 voucher can then be used as a rebate against your new boiler.
