In this report, Which? have tested, reviewed and compared the features of 52 different combi and heat-only boilers and provided the 8 best buy boilers on offer. Which? product tests are impartial and very thorough. They have tested the 52 boilers for three main areas – efficiency, build quality and ease of use. The Which efficiency test is performed to European Standards to measure how much of the gas each boiler burns is converted into heat and as part of the test each boiler is installed by a gas fitter to determine that the gas and electrical connections had sufficient room for the installation. Ease of installation was reviewed, as was the noise the condensing boiler makes during use, how easy it was to use and how readily it was possible to obtain spare parts for the boiler. Finally, each boiler was subjected to a durability test whereby the boiler was switched on 2,920 times (for combi boilers the figure is even higher) and run on full power for 5 minutes – this is the equivalent of the boiler being used over the course of a year.
